India has gained one place for mobile and two places for broadband speeds in the global rankings. According to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index, India ranked 118th globally in June for average mobile speeds, but rose to 117th in July. When it comes to broadband internet, the country jumped from 72nd in June to 70th in July.
While the overall ranking has seen some improvements, the average mobile download speed in India has declined from 14 Mbps in June to 13.41 Mbps in July. Fixed broadband followed a similar trend, with average download speeds falling from 48.11 Mbps in June to 48.03 Mbps in July.
The report also said that in July’s Speedtest global index, Lebanon gained 27 places, marking the highest increase in ranking. The United Arab Emirates secures the number one spot for global average mobile speeds. In terms of global average fixed broadband internet speed, Chile holds the top spot with developing countries such as Bhutan and Mauritania increasing by 22 points and 21st worldwide.
However, Ookla’s CEO recently told IndianExpress that the country is still “playing catch-up with already established 5G markets, it’s not starting from scratch.”
It is interesting to note that India’s overall broadband ranking is at the bottom. With 5G around the corner, India’s ranking is expected to improve in the coming months. According to a statement by Union Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, 5G networks are expected to be operational in 20-25 cities and towns by the end of the year.
