SKOWHEGAN, Maine (WABI) – A Skowhegan organization called “Beecoming the Change” welcomed a donation from the community on Tuesday.
It started as a back-to-school drive, collecting items like backpacks and school supplies for students in need.
They said they started getting other items like clothes, shoes and toiletries.
Kim Leo, owner of The SPACE on the River, says they wanted to include everyone because they were getting so many donations.
The raffle brought together over 100 people selecting their items.
Within two hours, all the school supplies were gone.
“I was trying to find a way to get people involved, like a group of teenagers that could help connect in our community,” Leo said. “And I’ve got really cool teenagers to boot!”
“Even sitting here, looking around, it makes you realize afterwards how much of an impact it really has,” volunteer Eleanor Tibbets said. “Going into this, we said, ‘Oh, we’ll see how it goes, how it works,’ and in the end, it makes you feel really good about what we’ve been doing and we really feel like we’ve had a great effect on the community.
At the end of the day, four lucky people won an LL bag filled with more school supplies and other goodies.
Any uncollected items will be donated.
