October 26: The Richmond Heights Police Department is partnering with Dunn Hardware to put outdoor lights in the hands of those who need them through its Lighting Safety Initiative.
Dunn Hardware at 5144 Wilson Mills is working with city police to donate a limited number of Dusk to Dawn light bulbs for residents to use in their homes.
Citizens can purchase light bulbs by visiting the police station at 27201 Highland from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to obtain a Lighting Safety Initiative certificate which they then bring to Dunn Hardware to receive their free bulb.
Police Chief Thomas Wetzel said lighting a home outside can help prevent crime simply because most criminals don’t want to be found out.
“The bad guys don’t want to be seen and these lights can help prevent these crimes,” Wetzel said. “These are fantastic measures that will help keep the community safe.”
The Richmond Heights City Council recently passed an ordinance requiring local businesses to have outdoor lighting on during the afternoon hours to make their neighborhood safer for other residents.
“We encourage all of our residents and businesses to consider outdoor night lighting in their homes and locations to deter criminal behavior and this is a symbiotic approach to crime prevention between our police department and a local business,” Wetzel said. “It takes a team effort to make a difference and we want to keep our city as safe as possible. Dunn Hardware is doing this community a tremendous service.”
Dunn Hardware stated that its initiative will continue until its supply runs out.
