PEORIA (Heart of Illinois ABC): Lost by their original owners, several dozen bicycles are now in new hands thanks to the Peoria Police Department.
A long line was already forming an hour before the event began Saturday morning, hosted in the department’s rear parking area. 65 bikes held by the department were given away to the first people to come out, with all ages welcome.
One officer says the motivation behind the raffle came from kids asking the department about their police bikes.
“Biking is a different way of patrolling neighborhoods,” he says, “so kids see us in neighborhoods and they’ve seen us at some of our events and (we thought) ‘Hey, we’ve got bikes, let’s give them to all the bicycles'”.
Since the officers brought their bike patrol units, neighborhood patrol officer James Hodges says kids watching them in the neighborhood wanted theirs, too.
For bikes that needed a little more care, representatives from bike manufacturer Trek were on hand to repair loose chains, adjust seats and fill tires with air.
