Sweetgreen opens today in St. Paul with giveaways and promotions throughout the day

Trendy salad chain Sweetgreen is opening its third Minnesota location in St. Paul on Tuesday, November 8.

Sweetgreen, which was founded in 2006 in Washington, DC but is now based in Los Angeles, serves a seasonally rotating menu of salads and grain bowls. In St. Paul, the restaurant is located at 735 Grand Ave., the spot on the corner of Grotto Street that housed Pier 1 Imports.

To mark the opening day, the salad chain will hold a series of promotions on November 8. The location of St. Paul sponsors giveaways from Minneapolis makers including The Plant Penthouse, Baker’s Field Flour and Bread and artist Ashley Mary, who also painted a large-scale mural for the restaurant space. There will also be music courtesy of DJRayMills of the Minnesota Vikings.

In addition, for every meal purchased on Tuesday, the company will donate a meal to Minnesota Central Kitchen, a project of Second Harvest Heartland. And, if you stop by with your “I Voted” sticker, you’ll get a free drink with your meal purchase.

Sweetgreen, which operates nearly 1,000 locations nationwide, has expanded rapidly in the Twin Cities. The chain’s first Minnesota location opened in September in Edina, and the second opened last month in the North Loop in Minneapolis. The company went public in the fall of 2021.

Our area has no shortage of fast-casual salad and plant-based places, however, creating a potential salad showdown. The Minnesota-based Crisp & Green chain, whose concept and menu are reminiscent of Sweetgreen’s, operates about a dozen locations in the Twin Cities, including one just four blocks west of Grand Avenue from the new Sweetgreen location, with many more to open across the state. That company’s founder, Steele Smiley, also runs the eponymously named Stalk & Spade, a vegan burger and shake joint with three locations in the Twin Cities. Another local health-focused company, Green + The Grain, operates several restaurants in downtown Minneapolis and a “mobile food court.”

In St. Paul, Sweetgreen will be open from 10:30am to 10:00pm daily.
