Councilor Joann Ariola will host a rain barrel giveaway at Ozone Park on Saturday, August 27.
The event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Living Word Christian Fellowship, located at 132-05 Cross Bay Blvd.
“Rain barrels not only help homeowners lower their water bills, but they can also help fight local flooding,” Ariola said. “Each barrel can prevent up to 55 gallons of rainwater from entering the sewer system. As many of my constituents know, when it rains, our sewer systems are often completely overwhelmed, resulting in flooded streets and basements.”
With each barrel donated to the public, according to Ariola, there is much less water entering the system, giving much more peace of mind to local residents who might otherwise find themselves inundated with flood water.
Rain barrels are connected to a rain gutter to collect and store excess water during rainy periods. According to the city’s Department of Environmental Protection, stored rainwater can be used for outdoor tasks such as gardening or washing the car. Using a rain barrel can help people save money, as outdoor chores can account for up to 40% of an average household’s water use during the summer .
Those interested in obtaining a free rain barrel must pre-register by calling the Ariola office at 718-738-1083. One barrel is available per household.
