Lyon Arboretum plants trees for 1,000 tree giveaway event

The University of Hawaii at Mānoa Lyon Arboretum helped plant more than 100 trees for a 1,000 tree gift event at Uh‘s College Hill on November 12.

Varieties available include Avocado, Sea Hibiscus, Taro, Koa, Chanterelle, False Wiliwili, Monkeypod, Mountain Apple, Palms, Papaya, Plumeria, Tea Leaf, grow up (breadfruit) and many others. Attendees were able to take home a tree for free. The biennial event is organized by the Mānoa Outdoor Circle.

“Lyon is the Mānoa Arboretum and Botanical Garden, so we thought it was a great opportunity to partner with other environmental groups like the Mānoa Outdoor Circle and Mālama Mānoa to host a tree-focused community event like this,” he said. Tim Kroesig, head of horticulture at the Lyon Arboretum. “Tree giveaways and plant sales are a great way to connect with the community and let them know the importance of green spaces and the benefits of trees.”

Jackie Osumi it’s spring 2022 Uh Mānoa majored in biology and serves on the board of the Mānoa Outdoor Circle.

“The 1,000 Tree Gift is our biennial event that aligns perfectly with our organization’s mission to keep our beautiful Mānoa clean, green and beautiful!” Osumi said. “Being born and raised in this beautiful valley, I am very fortunate to be part of an organization that values ​​caring for the land and preserving the place I call home. I’m really excited for those who go out and get a tree! Let’s fight climate change one step at a time!”

Lyon Arboretum also helped plant trees for a tree adoption event at the Uh Mānoa Campus on November 4 to celebrate Arbor Day a Hawaii.

Although Arbor Day a Hawaii officially falls on the first Friday in November, Kroessig said every day is Arbor Day at Lyon Arboretum and welcomes visitors to enjoy the benefits and beauty of trees. For opening hours and how to visit the arboretum, visit the Lyon website.
