Starting off on the right foot is important, so a metro nonprofit is stepping in to make sure all student-athletes get that opportunity. HoopRank Communities held its second annual back-to-school sneaker giveaway — 175 pairs of shoes were given away. Organizers say kids shouldn’t be left out for something as small as a pair of shoes. “If you look at this court right now, you’ll see kids playing basketball in running shoes, kids playing basketball in church shoes, kids playing basketball in different shoes. And they’re at a serious competitive disadvantage because to someone who’s just part of the sport,” said Kris Kuhn, founder of the nonprofit. The organization also helps families with sports-related fees and transportation issues. To participate, go to hooprankcommunities.org.
