#WasteNotYGK is back this Saturday for Raffle Day: Kingstonians will be putting reusable items out on their lawns for neighbors to come and give their items new life.
The move aims to reduce waste in Kingston by extending the life of usable but unwanted items.
“When you collect free second-hand items, you’re not only saving them from landfills, but you’re also reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with making new products and helping your neighbors save money,” said Adam Mueller, Solid Waste supervisor.
Draw Day guidelines only include eligible items that someone really wants, such as books, CDs/DVDs, furniture/appliances, electronics, building materials, kitchen appliances, and unwanted gifts.
Meanwhile, Health Canada’s Office of Consumer Product Safety has listed inappropriate items as follows: walkers, cribs, car seats, strollers, playpens, bath seats, mattresses, blinds and toys.
The city is asking interested participants to place items on the sidewalk outside their homes with stickers or signs that say “free” to ensure only unwanted items are taken from outside their homes.
If items are left uncollected, they should be taken back home or to a charity, as the city will not pick up unwanted items left on the sidewalk.
