Brookville man prepares for Christmas season bike gifts

BROOKVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) – For about five years, Dave Nugent has been fixing up bikes to give away to kids in need.

“It’s something I do,” Nugent said. “Every year there seems to be more demand.”

In fact, demand is so high that Nugent isn’t even sure how many he’s given away.

“I stopped counting this year,” Nugent said. “Last year, there were more than 3,000. I’d say I’ve almost doubled it this year.”

You can imagine the time Nugent spends working on these bikes, but that’s not his only investment.

“The tubes are $5,” Nugent said. “The tires cost me $15 to $20 a piece. So you can take a small bike and put $40 on it easily. So it costs a little bit, but I like to do it.”

He calls it a bicycle ministry, but he says he’s the one being blessed.

“I’m tickled to death,” Nugent said. “Actually, as I tell everyone, this is my Christmas.”

Speaking of Christmas, this year, he’s doing it a lot.

Parents and children can stop by their home at 142 June Place in Brookville beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 19 for a great Christmas gift.

It not only gives away dozens of refurbished bikes, but also new toys. He will also have a drawing of several new bikes and a drawing of Santa’s money for the kids to use to go shopping.

Giveaway will continue until items run out.

“There is a need,” Nugent said. “The way the economy is and the way money is, any time you can help someone save a little bit, that’s a good thing.”

Nugent says if you can’t make it out on Saturday, he hopes to have some bikes available after the big draw.

He prefers that parents bring the children who will receive the bikes when they come to pick them up. Unfortunately, some people have taken bikes and resold them. He says he just wants to make sure the bikes get to the kids who really need them.

If you’d like to donate a used bike or parts to Nugent’s bike ministry, he says you can contact him on Facebook by sending him a message here.
