After Sunday’s backpack raffle, 1st Dibz Barbershop Boutique plans to offer discounted haircuts, free food and the first Friday of every month.
TOLEDO, Ohio – Hundreds of people gathered outside 1st Dibz Barber Shop Boutique on West Sylvania Avenue Sunday to get backpacks and school supplies. The event was the first in a series dedicated to bringing positive energy back to the community, said barber Marcus Crawford.
“We want to take the opportunities we didn’t have when we were kids for the less fortunate like us,” he said. “We just decided to give back.”
They said they got to where they are by staying in school; therefore, they want to motivate the next generation to do the same.
“Just being in a position to do it is really what got us through,” barber Trevor Wallace said. “We just want to give back to our childhood. Just being able to have people to look up to and people you can go to, whether it’s a conversation or a haircut.”
1stDibz barbers said more than 300 backpacks were given away. Chauncy Wilburn said attending the raffle was worth it because “school supplies are so expensive.”
“It’s really good to see people standing up to give back to their community and do what’s right because it’s not your usual stuff that you’re getting back,” Wilburn said.
After the backpack giveaway, 1st Dibz is planning “1st Fridays” where they’ll be offering discounted haircuts, free food and more on the first Friday of every month for the rest of the year from 2-7pm at 2852 W. Sylvania. Av.
