Spain: Sunbed Hunger Games sees ’90-minute queue’ before sprint

The battle for sunbeds has continued at a Spanish resort (Image: TikTok/chloeturner_1)

Holidaymakers at a Tenerife resort woke up at dawn to secure a sunbed in a prime location.

Chaotic footage shows hotel guests clutching their towels as they wait tentatively by a pool-side barrier.

When they get the green light from the staff, the crowd suddenly descends on the patio from all angles in a mad sprint to grab a lounger.

The scenes took place at a “family-friendly” resort in Playa de Las Americas.

They were filmed by Chloe Turner, who claimed people started queuing from 6.30am until 90 minutes before the pool opened at 8am.

A series of similar videos have captured the frenzied scramble for sunbeds in Europe’s resorts as Britons enjoy their first summer with most Covid travel restrictions lifted.

A dad was seen hiding in bed grabbing a pile of towels before frantically throwing them across the sunbeds at the Tenerife resort.

Meanwhile, queues of eager holidaymakers began forming at 6am at a hotel in the Canary Islands, before speed walking to claim their seats.

Spain is among the countries in Western Europe that have been affected by the warm temperatures that have caused several forest fires.

The country suffered two heatwaves last month with temperatures above 40C, fueling concerns about the sustainability of agriculture.

Scientists in Seville for the first time gave a name to the heat wave recorded between July 24 and 27, calling it Zoe.

The new naming system was part of a pilot program launched in June to raise awareness of the importance of heat waves and protect public health in the warmer months.
