MultiVersus was July’s best-selling video game in the U.S. market based on dollar sales, the NPD Group reported Friday.
Although Warner’s game is free-to-play, MultiVersus led in monthly sales due to the popularity of its Founder’s Packs, which cost between $40 and $100, the market research firm said.
Elden Ring fell to No. 2 on the software list for July, while Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga also slipped one place to No. 3.
The only other new entries in the top 20 were Xenoblade Chronicles 3 at #4 (though it might have been higher if NPD tracked Switch digital sales in its ranked reports) and Digimon Survive at #8.
On the hardware side, PS5 generated the highest dollar sales of any console in both July and 2022 so far, while Switch led both periods based on unit sales.
NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said total consumer spending on gaming hardware, content and accessories in July fell 9% compared to the same period last year, to $4.18 billion.
Year-to-date spending totaled $30.5 billion, which represents a 10% decline compared to the same period in 2021, with subscription content remaining the only major spending category experiencing growth.
Season 1 of MultiVersus launched this week. The Season 1 update included notable changes: nerfs to Bugs Bunny, Velma, and Finn, three characters generally considered to be among the best in the game.
Meanwhile, Arya Stark, LeBron James, and Wonder Woman, three characters who are said to be slightly weaker, received benefits.
