New Dune game announcements teased the world’s vaguest leak

The vaguest industry leak hints at a new Dune game or an update to Funcom’s Dune survival title.

Remember the in-development multiplayer open-world survival game Dune? We don’t blame you if not; we also forgot it existed, but recent online chatter has suddenly thrust it back into the public eye.

That’s because The Snitch, the world’s vaguest yet most accurate leaker, recently released an image of a poster for the Dune movie from 2021. Although slightly edited so that the character on the poster has the hair from The Snitch’s profile picture.

Given their reputation for extremely accurate video game leaks (most recently they teased something related to Alone In The Dark before a remake was announced), it stands to reason that there will be some sort of related game announcement with Dune on the horizon.

What’s not clear is whether this is a brand new game or the aforementioned survival game, which we know next to nothing about and has no trailer of any kind.

The leak’s complete lack of detail makes it impossible to tell, with the edited hair perhaps hinting at a character customization feature, which would make sense for a multiplayer game (or the Snitch himself starring in a Dune game, but we doubt it).

Leaks of The Snitch are usually followed by an official reveal soon after. While we could randomly see a trailer in the next week or so, it’s entirely possible that a Dune game will appear at Gamescom on Tuesday.

Specifically, the Gamescom Opening Night Live presentation, which according to Geoff Keighley, will feature at least 30 new and existing games.

All we know about the survival game Dune is that it is in development at the Norwegian studio Funcom, specifically in its Oslo office, which last released the survival game Conan Exiles in 2018.

Funcom announced the game in 2019 (via Game Developer) as part of its new partnership with Legendary Pictures, which was said to last six years and include a minimum of three Dune games for PC and consoles.

One of them, strategy title Dune: Spice Wars, is already available as an Early Access title on PC (with a full release planned for 2023), and earlier this year Funcom set up a racing website specifically for the survival game Dune.

That still leaves at least one more Dune game, which may be what The Snitch alludes to.

There’s also a couple of pieces of concept art on Funcom’s website (photo: Funcom)
