Hollywood giant Lionsgate has revealed it is in discussions to greenlight “a big AAA game” based on the John Wick franchise.
John Wick is a trilogy of critically and commercially successful action films starring Keanu Reeves as a retired assassin out for revenge. A fourth installment will be released in March 2023.
During a recent earnings call with investors (transcribed by Indiewire), Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer stated that executives were looking to expand on the success of the film series with a major video game project and claim that they have already been “proposed”.
“I don’t want to get ahead of myself here, but we think there’s a big AAA game that’s going to be made with John Wick,” he said. “We have been presenting proposals. We’re certainly interested in taking this forward, but I don’t want to say anything more about it at this time.”
In addition to Chapter 4, a John Wick spinoff movie starring Ana de Armas will begin production next week. Additionally, a prequel series “The Continental” will be available to stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video internationally.
A John Wick video game has already been released in 2020’s John Wick Hex, an indie game from designer Mike Bithell with strategy-style gameplay.
The key figures behind the John Wick movies seem to be video game fans. Director Chad Stahelski is currently at the helm of the Ghost of Tsushima movie, while the writer behind the franchise was at one point adapting Just Cause for the big screen.
