League of Legends is adding Jungle Pets

Riot Games is planning another change to the jungle for the League of Legends preseason, and this time it’s doing something completely new. The in-work jungle change overview shared this week confirmed that Riot intends to add jungle pets, pets that will help junglers clear the rainforest itself while empowering champions to some degree. Riot’s full plans haven’t been laid out yet, so we only know the teases to give a hint of what could happen.

The abundance of jungle changes was first discussed in a Lol Pls video that focused on the upcoming preseason and a couple of upcoming champions. The pets are inherited from changes planned for the jungle items themselves which Riot said doesn’t usually bring a lot of excitement and readability to things like Red Smite. Riot isn’t leaving to return to the days of The Elder Lizard or Wriggle’s Lantern, but to experiment with these pets in new ways.

This pet will help you do something in the jungle like clearing or destroying epic monsters (think old puppy Devourer), says a link on the League site. Because of the forest and its ramifications, the pet grows slowly and is fed slowly until they become more fit to grow.

Two early images show what kind of things Riot is looking at, but the developers clarified that the concepts were very early in development and that things will look different when the idea is fully realized. In the picture below the little wolf ran into the jungle behind Mundo; similarly, Riot used replacement effects to improve the player’s position.

“Our first prototype was a jungle wolf, followed by a helicopter that followed you as you killed a camp, and when you escaped from the camp, Ahri missiles exploded in the wolf’s mouth,” according to the post. “At one point, the wolf became very small (and unlike our love for him) and stuck to your head. Then the recolored version of an extremely responsible Chinese version of the tiger flashed at you as the sound Aatrox’s max activation was repeatedly deployed.

As for what this buff does, Riot isn’t saying yet, so we’ll have to wait until the preseason when there are a few more questions you’ll get.
