Port of Kiel ends record cruise season

The port of Kiel has seen a record total of 243 calls during the current cruise season, which ends next week when the Vasco da Gama docks at Ostseekai, an increase of about 40 percent compared to 2019, according to a report Press release.

This season, half of all initial calls were made by US brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Hurtigruten ships also made their first port calls.

“We are particularly pleased that after several years of planning we have succeeded in attracting more and more international shipping companies to Kiel,” stated Dirk Claus, Managing Director of SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co.

Another outstanding statistic for the current cruise season in Kiel is the number of traffic calls, which was 34, far exceeding previous years’ figures. 70,000 of the total of 834,431 cruise passengers visited Kiel as a travel destination alone, while creating an international touch in the state capital during the peak season, according to the port.

The port is also a pioneer in the expansion of shore power infrastructure for ships in Europe. In addition to the daily supply of Stena Line and Color Line ferries, the company has focused on a low-emission electricity supply for cruise ships since 2021.

After successful technical tests this year, AIDAprima, as well as Mein Schiff 4, Mein Schiff 6, Artania and Nieuw Statendam, docked emission-free in Kiel. Other boats have started to join this year and will continue during the next season.

“Our conclusion after the first season of offshore power is that Ostseekai vessels find excellent infrastructure and employees with extensive knowledge that make it possible to integrate our side without any problems,” he said Keys.

This season, 19 calls have been supplied with European green electricity, although more commitment to cruise line sustainability is expected in the future, Claus added.

As one of only 29 cruise ports worldwide with adequate infrastructure, the port expects the number of shore-powered calls to triple next season. Two additional facilities are already planned in Kiel and are expected to be completed by the end of 2023, supplying the Ostuferhafen cruise terminal.
