More Americans report an increase in crime in their neighborhoods than at any time since 1972, when Gallup first surveyed the problem.
Fifty-six percent of American adults perceive more crime in their area than the previous year, according to the group’s latest survey, a 5-point increase from 2021. The highest level the survey previous record was 54 percent in 1981 and 1992.
Gallup also measured perceptions of increased national crime, finding that 78 percent of adults say there is more crime in the country than last year.
The findings come as crime remains a top issue among likely midterm voters. In a recent Harvard CAPS-Harris poll, 68% of voters called crime a “very important issue” and 26% said it is “somewhat important.”
Even as crime is on the rise across the country, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) said she “can’t believe” voters are supporting Republicans on Election Day.
