ABINGTON, Mass. – A boy was rescued Monday after falling into a pool on Plymouth Street in Abington.

“I was studying for my dental school entrance exam,” said Savennah Mendes-Rodridgues. “And then out of nowhere we hear screams and ‘oh call an ambulance, call an ambulance’ and then I go out into the kitchen and there’s a little boy on the floor.”

Savennah Mendes-Rodrigues says she jumped into action when a family friend’s son nearly drowned in her pool.

He says the two-year-old boy had fallen into the water and was barely breathing when he was brought in.

“I was actually very calm, I started chest compressions while everyone was panicking in the background,” Mendes-Rodrigues said.

She says she continued to give the boy compressions until first responders arrived, at which point the boy was breathing again.

Once the firefighters arrived at the scene, they took over the treatment. The boy was taken to South Shore Hospital, according to Abington Deputy Fire Chief Jack Glynn.

“Then they were like ‘wow you probably saved his life for all we know,'” Mendes-Rodrigues said. “I didn’t think about it at the time because it was pretty simple, I wasn’t really thinking about anything, I was just kind of in the moment, like oh my God, and then I was like, ‘Oh, I think I just saved him.’

As a registered dental assistant, Mendes-Rodrigues says she is required to be CPR certified, and says luckily she was studying at home at the time, as she is usually at work.

“When I was training for CPR, everyone was like, ‘I’m never going to use this, this doesn’t make sense,’ until you’re actually in the situation and then it’s like woah, this seems really useful.” he said. Mendes-Rodrigues.
