Azi Paybarah joins The Post as a breaking news reporter on national politics

Announcement from National Editor Matea Gold, Deputy National Editor Philip Rucker, Senior Politics Editor Dan Eggen and Breaking News Editor Donna Cassata:

We are pleased to announce that Azi Paybarah is joining The Washington Post as a reporter for the national politics breaking news team.

Azi brings a wealth of experience on politics and breaking news. Since 2018, he has worked at the New York Times, most recently as a reporter on the Politics desk. He has written about the registration of candidates backed by former President Donald Trump in this year’s legislatures, the Republicans’ gun-focused ads, the effort by 9/11 families to challenge Trump over his golf tournament backed by Saudi Arabia and Rudy Giuliani’s false claims about the 2020 election.

Before joining the Times, Azi co-founded the FAQ NYC podcast and covered New York politics for Politico New York, the New York Observer and WNYC Public Radio. He was born in New York City and graduated from the State University of New York at Albany. Azi, who got married in a comic book store, likes graphic novels, bad puns, and watching improv shows.

Azi, who starts Aug. 22, will move to Washington this fall, followed by his wife, Stephanie, and their dog, Porsche. Please join us in welcoming him.
