At least 146 dead in stampede at Itaewon Halloween celebration in Seoul

seoul – At least 146 people were killed and about 150 injured Saturday night after an apparent crowd crush during Halloween celebrations in the Itaewon area of Seoul, according to fire department officials.

Witnesses reported a chaotic scene of revelers crammed into narrow streets near Itaewon Station, some trying to leave the area after a night of celebrations. Some people couldn’t even move through the crowd from elbow to elbow. Many could not hear each other over the noise or call for help due to lack of cell connections.

Dozens of ambulances were lined up along the main road in Itaewon, a foreigner-friendly international district where large crowds had gathered this weekend for Halloween festivities. Many of the victims were in their 20s and 30s, both Koreans and foreigners, according to fire officials cited in South Korean media reports.
